A brief history lesson

AP Asks: Why So Many Upset by Iraq Death Toll?

Published: January 01, 2007 10:04 PM ET
PHILADELPHIA The country largely kept the faith during World War II, even as about 400,000 U.S. forces died - 20,000 just in the month long Battle of the Bulge. Before turning against the wars in Korea and Vietnam, Americans tolerated thousands more deaths than in Iraq.

Has something changed? Do Americans somehow place higher value on the lives of their soldiers now? Do they expect success at lower cost? Or do most simply dismiss this particular war as the wrong one - hard to understand and harder to win - and so not worth the losses?

The Associated Press recently posed these questions to scholars, veterans, activists, and other Americans. Their comments suggest that the public does express more pain over the deaths of this war.

A death toll of 3,000 simply sounds higher to Americans in this war than it did in other prolonged conflicts of the past century, for a number of reasons, the interviews suggest.

"As fewer Americans die in war, their loss is more keenly felt, not necessarily at a personal level, but at a collective and public level," says historian Michael Allen at North Carolina State University.

Jeffrey Greenwood, 17, of Plymouth, Mass., though unsure of the exact number of Iraq war deaths, says, "I know it's enough to make people angry."

John Mueller, a political scientist at Ohio State University, calls this casualty sensitivity "the Iraq syndrome." He described it in an influential journal article last year: "Casualty for casualty, support has declined far more quickly than it did during either the Korean War or the Vietnam War."

In the weeks after the U.S. invasion of Iraq in March 2003, public backing was powerful. But opinion began to shift quickly once the Iraqi army was beaten, its leader was forced into hiding, and chemical, biological or nuclear weapons were not found.

"When is it going to stop? We're losing a lot of youngsters," says former tanker Ed Collins, 82, of Hicksville, N.Y., who survived the assault on Normandy's beaches in World War II. "I went in when I was 18; that was young, too. But we fought for something. Now we have no idea who we're fighting for and what we're fighting for."

First of all, colonial wars are unpopular. In all but name, this is our version of the Boer War or Algeria. Neither one of those wars were cheered on by their publics. One of the great hidden facts of British History is that most of the colonial wars were bitterly opposed by the public. Elections turned on ending them.

The idea that this should be compared to WWII is ridiculous. Our military is a fraction of the 12m man WWII Army or the 9m Vietnam War army. Each death in Iraq is disproportionally more important because of the size of the force, and would represent a much greater loss. If we were talking 27,000 dead and 180,000 wounded, people might understand why the war is so unpopular. This in a war with no regular army.

Second, while fewer Americans are fighting, the age and social status of those in combat have changed. With the large scale use of reserve and National Guard, those wounded and killed have a far more striking effect in their communities. When teachers and policemen, and other members of the middle class are wounded or killed, the effect of that is disproportionally higher than when teenage soldiers die.

Third, outside of the History Channel and the Military Channel, the pace and tempo of combat in Iraq has been hidden. Any episode of My War Diary or Shootout will show an Iraq war of frightening intensity. So the deaths have no context. Bush's lies about Iraq have so poisoned the well that people are shocked when they find out Iraq is extremely dangerous.

Charles Moskos lives in a fantasy world that if only the elite fought, Americans would accept higher losses. When have the elite fought? Most of the wealthy in WWII did not join the Rangers or Airborne, but sought the Navy or Army Air Force. The wealthy in America have never thought carrying a rifle was a sound option.

But the whole premise of the AP article is insane. We are losing this war, any chance we had to win it ended in April, 2003. Why should Americans accept 3,000 dead for a colonial war which we are losing? They shouldn't. This was is illegal and has failed to help US foriegn policy goals. One death is unacceptable, 3,000 should lead to impeachment and trial.

Leave Michael alone, liberal devils

Jackson Accuser's Former Lawyer Testifies

By LINDA DEUTSCH, AP Special Correspondent

SANTA MARIA, Calif. - The lawyer who first interviewed Michael Jackson's accuser testified Friday in the pop star's child molestation trial that he never was asked to file a lawsuit against the singer.

The prosecution called Larry Feldman as part of its explanation to the jury of how the alleged molestation came to the attention of authorities. But the defense used his appearance to pursue its contention that the accuser and his family were out to get money from Jackson.

Feldman acknowledged under cross-examination that the boy could file a civil lawsuit against Jackson until he turns 20 years old. The accuser is now 15.

Jackson's lawyer, Thomas Mesereau Jr., grilled Feldman about whether a conviction of Jackson on child molestation charges would make it easier for them to get a financial judgment against the pop star.

"If Mr. Jackson was convicted of felony child molestation in this case, (the boy or his brother) could use that case to win a civil case alleging similar or same facts against Mr. Jackson, is that correct?" asked Mesereau.

"That's correct," said Feldman.

District Attorney Tom Sneddon asked Feldman whether he was contemplating a lawsuit at the time that he referred the boy and his family to prosecutors.

"There was no lawsuit and there were no plans to file a lawsuit," said Feldman. "It was up to you to investigate."

During an afternoon break, a handful of Jackson fans yelled "liar," "tell the truth," and "you're making money off the backs of these people" when Feldman walked outside the courthouse.

Why are they going after such a fine Christian man like Michael Jackson. Just because he sought to guide boys from a life of sin. Maybe he spoiled them a bit too much, but he was guiding them to the light of Jesus.

Those white liberal devils are attacking him because he is a famous man who doesn't need women. I wish I could live such a sin-free life, but I was called upon to reproduce and my wife and I perform our duties. We wanted six kids, but we could only produce three.

But I understand why Michael Jackson wanted to be white. After all, wouldn't you want to avoid being a low account negro. I don't know why his brothers didn't do the same. I would have done it, if I had his money. Mr. Worthington wouldn't lend me the cash after giving me a whole dollar an hour raise.

But Michael Jackson no more messed with them boys than George Bush laughed at Karla Kaye Tucker. Our President would have never laugh at a good Christian woman meeting her doom for her sinful ways.

Father, Guards Face Charges in 'Scared Straight' Stunt

April 1, 2005 -- A Pennsylvania man allegedly wanted to scare his son out of taking up a dangerous lifestyle, but the father and five of his friends, who are guards at a juvenile detention center, could be the ones who end up doing jail time.

Allegheny County police issued an arrest warrant for Anthony Donald, 37, of Penn Hills, and the five guards from the Shuman Juvenile Detention Center, on charges including false imprisonment, unlawful restraint, official oppression, simple assault and conspiracy.

Three of the guards surrendered to police Thursday morning in connection with injuries suffered by the 13-year-old boy over the weekend.

Donald's son told police he was harassed for about an hour and physically assaulted after his father turned him over to the guards on Sunday for a "scared straight" attempt.

"It's alleged that the child care workers, with varying degrees of culpability, assaulted the young juvenile and held him in a room against his will," Allegheny County Police Superintendent Charles Moffatt said.

Upon the boy's release, his mother took him to a hospital because he complained of pains.

Police said the guards apparently agreed to take the boy inside the center as a favor to Donald, who wanted to persuade him against a potentially harmful lifestyle.

What kind of crap is this? The man is trying to raise he boy right and this is the kind of crap they do to him. We have too many low account negroes coddled by their mothers who wind up in jail. I think that this is only fair and decent. Them boys need discipline, so they can get decent jobs. That boy was fine. His mother was babying him.

My wife? I make sure she's in church, so when I whip my kids, she's so busy serving the lord, she can't hear their jesus-filled screams. Boy,. nothing like a good whipping to get a kid to praise and call for Jesus. It's a perfect way to find the lord.

If I didn't have to drive Mr. Worthington around to his Russian friend's place in the city, me and the children would have been outside that poor girl's hopsital, praying for that murdering bastard of a husband to die at the hands of a righteous avenger. And blow up his house and kids as well, Whore spawns. Not good chrisitian children like my kids, Mary, Joseph and James. Although I don't get why Mary has all those rainbow flags around. And the key chain. For a 16 year old basketball player, she seems so dedicated. She doesn't even talk to boys. I'm so glad. I wouldn't want to throw her out in the street for being a whore and having some nigger's baby

Go Jets!!!!

Mayor Bloomberg Hails Jets Stadium Vote

NEW YORK Apr 1, 2005 — Mayor Michael Bloomberg hailed a public agency board's unanimous vote for a proposed $1.9 billion stadium and said Friday that critics are "against economic opportunity for all New Yorkers."

The plan, designed to lure the 2012 Olympics and provide a new home for the New York Jets, was approved Thursday by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority board. The agency owns the site on Manhattan's West Side where the stadium is to be built.

The board accepted a $720 million offer from the Jets to develop the site, turning down two competing proposals worth more money.

"When you think stadium, the words that you've got to think about is not Jets but jobs," Bloomberg said Friday on WABC-AM radio.

Among the critics of the plan is City Council speaker Gifford Miller, a Democrat who is hoping to challenge the Republican mayor this fall in his bid for a second term. At Thursday's meeting, Miller called the vote "a terrible mistake."

"I find it fascinating, some of these people who want to run for office and are against development and against jobs," Bloomberg said. "What side are they on if they're against economic opportunity for all New Yorkers?"

Many city voters do not share his zeal, opposing the plan by 53 percent to 38 percent, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released before the vote. Some residents have said the stadium will cause too much congestion and cost too much money.

Sports is a good thing and we need more stadiums. I hope those Manhattan liberals choke on their fumes. Why are they against black millionaires having place to work in the city? Are they only good enough to play in Jersey? This is liberal racism in the extreme. They don't think black football players are good enough to inhabit their racist city. God I hate white liberals.

My heroes

I'm Bob Gilbert

As a put upon black conservative, I feel completely negelected by the media. My views are rarely heard and I am just tired of the way that people who don't go along with the liberal hegemony.

Let me discuss who my heroes are:

Tom DeLay: A fine, upstanding American who wanted to support the rule of God over the rule of a few terrorist judges. Why, as an upstanding black man who is a deacon in his church, I know jesus walks with the GOP and not the culture of death Demorats. Why I just spent last year helping to elect George Bush.

Just because my neighbors in Freeport shot at me with birdshot doesn't make my efforts any less worthwhile. Lazy niggers. If they would just pull themselves up by their bootstraps,. we wouldn't have the worst school district in Long Island, despite a high tax base. My God, you just can't leave black people in charge of anything worth a damn.

That's why my son is going to a fine conservative university like Princeton. Where he'll meet upstanding people and shake off his negroism and become a fine American like me.
